It’s better to have your own house, renting is dead money.

COLAC Primary School teacher Rhys Tillack has just moved into a brand new four bedroom house at Wyuna Estate and is rapt with his decision to buy rather than rent.

He is one of a growing number of young singles who have invested in recent stages of Elliminyt’s Wyuna Estate.

After living in Warrnambool for four years while he was studying, Rhys said he was happy to return to Colac, but didn’t want to fall into the rental trap.

Needing some advice on how to go about buying land and building a home, Rhys met with Wyuna developers Brendan and Roslyn Scanlan, who live on the estate and have built several homes there.

“Instead of renting I thought I’d rather buy a place or build. It’s better to have your own house, otherwise it’s dead money,” Rhys said.

“I wasn’t 100 per cent sure how to go about it, but Ros and Brendan were fantastic.

“I paid the deposit on the block in February and moved in in October – so if you’re in a hurry it can be done.

“There’s a sense of confidence around having everything built new.”

Rhys has designs on creating a garden and maybe a cricket pitch in the back yard, and feels his patch of Wyuna Estate will be his long-term home.

“It’s a new part of town so it appeals to young people – all the neighbours around here are young,” Rhys said.

“I’ve got a couple of friends who live on the Estate and my cousin has a block just up around the corner.”
